Bollywood music director A.R. Rahman became the first Indian to win the Golden Globe Award, for best original musical score in Danny Boyle's movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

"Slumdog Millionaire" hit the jackpot at the Golden Globes , winning four of the coveted awards including best film drama to give it a leg up in Hollywood's race for Oscars.
"Slumdog," which tells of a young Indian man looking for love and competing for money on a television game show, also earned awards for director Danny Boyle, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and composer A.R. Rahman for best musical score.
Director Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" was named best film musical or comedy.Kate Winslet grabbed two Golden Globes, one for best actress in a drama in her role as a frustrated housewife in "Revolutionary Road" and the second for best supporting actress playing a German woman with a hidden past in "The Reader."
Mickey Rourke was named best actor in a film drama with "The Wrestler" and Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental drug overdose last year, was named best supporting actor for playing the villain Joker in Batman movie "The Dark Knight."
Colin Farrell won best actor in a musical or comedy with his role as a hitman in "In Bruges," and Sally Hawkins was best actress in the same group for her work as an optimis.
"Wall-E," took home best animated film, and Israel's "Waltz with Bashir" was named best foreign language film.

A total of 13 overseas Indians were honoured with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman for their work towards the welfare of people of Indian origin. THE Supreme Court has said that the public servants can face prosecution without prior sanction of the appropriate authorities as all their acts in the purported discharge of the official duties cannot be brought under the protective umbrella of section 197 of the Criminal Procedure Code. On the other hand, there can be cases of misuse and abuse of power vested in a public servant which can never be a part of their official duties, said the apex court.

The foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) to India up to the month of November 2008 increased by 8.0% over the arrivals for the same period in 2007. National Conference party chief Omar Abdullah will take oath as the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) would launch a weather satellite, the 'Mehga Tropiques' in coming times. The satellite has been developed by collaboration of Indian and French space agency CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales). It has been specially designed to analyze tropical study and causes of cyclones, monsoons, and other climate and weather related phenomenon.

ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair has been selected for 'Newsmaker of 2008' award by viewers of Manorama News.

India's fertiliser subsidy is likely to touch Rs 1,02,000 crore this fiscal. This is 14,000 Crore less than the revised estimates of the government.

States, including Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh, have been complaining against the stamp duty exemption given to SEZs for more than a year now, have intensified their protest. State governments have questioned the Centre’s powers to exempt SEZs and units from paying stamp duty as they consider it a state subject. In a recent meeting of state finance officials, states reiterated that the exemption given by the Centre was leading to revenue loss for states and should be immediately withdrawn. States have alleged that while the Centre had the power of legislation, the power to fix rates lay with the states.
The SEZ Act was passed in Parliament in 2005 while the rules were notified in February 2006.
